Sartre also writes about Giacometti’s strange use of space – the sense that however physically close you get to his sculptures, they always seem distant, unreachable.

For the Existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, in fact, Giacometti's sculpture was "always halfway between nothingness and being." Such sculptures were full of meaning to Sartre, who said of them, "At first glance we seem to be up against the fleshless martyrs of Buchenwald.

Giacometti has been able to give this matter the only truly human unity: the unity of the Act. Such, I think, is the sort of Copernican revolution Giacometti has tried to introduce into sculpture. Before him the effort was to sculpt being, and that absolute melted away in an infinity of appearances. Sartre and Genet, who both wrote literary works about him, embraced his work: Sartre with “The quest for the absolute” and Genet with “The studio of Alberto Giacometti”. Sartre also wrote about Wols work and it is surprising that only Sartre identified these artists out of the eleven on an existential level. Giacometti was one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. His work was particularly influenced by artistic styles such as Cubism and Surrealism. Philosophical questions about the human condition, as well as existential and phenomenological debates played a significant role in his work.
